BURNING MAN: BEYOND BLACK ROCK will make its world festival premiere next month when it is screened twice at AFI Fest 2005 in Los Angeles. Both showings will be at the renowned Arclight Hollywood Cinema on Sunset Boulevard.
BEYOND BLACK ROCK’s presence at the festival is a unique opportunity for the filmmakers and the audience alike, according to producer Mike Wilson.
“Being selected for AFI Fest is an honor for any filmmaker, but for this team in particular, made up completely of first-time filmmakers, it’s almost unthinkable that we were selected for the competition at a festival that receives nearly 1,000 submissions each year.” said Wilson. “Not to mention the fact that our film is about Burning Man, a topic that’s been completely ignored by major festivals in the past and generally marginalized in the mainstream media since its inception.”
“It’s truly an honor to finally tell these people’s story in a way that will hopefully lead to an understanding and sense of pride over what these people manage to pull off in the desert every year… in modern day America, of all places.”
The film has been strongly endorsed by the Burning Man organization, who are notoriously protective of media depictions of the event and its culture.
"This film captures the Burning Man organization and its community in a very in-depth manner and at an important crossroads, as the event is evolving into a movement and as we prepare to take the culture, principles, and particularly the interactive art of Burning Man out of the Black Rock Desert and into the communities of the world,” said Burning Man founder and executive director Larry Harvey.
“Gone Off Deep has done an excellent job of synthesizing where we came from, where we are, and where we are going in a manner easily understandable to the public at large, which is of paramount importance to the sustained growth of the event and the understanding and acceptance of our culture in the outside world."
